A suitcase for the South

In the winter, is there anything better than going away for a week or two in a country with warm weather, to enjoy the sun and take in some vitamin D? Before leaving, let's not forget certain details...

PREPARATION

In order to fully take advantage of a week under the sun, you need to be prepared, and that sometimes means getting a few vaccines before leaving. It is even mandatory to have a proof of vaccination against some illnesses, including yellow fever, before entering some countries in central and South America. As soon as you have chosen a destination, do not forget to visit this site to know if you need vaccines.

Also, do not forget about travel insurance, an investment that might save you a lot of headaches later on.

PREPARING YOUR SUITCASE

It is sometimes hard to remember exactly what you need for warmer weather when it is snowing outside.

One of the best ways to not forget anything is to not prepare your suitcase at the last minute. Your favourite clothes are those you wear the most often, it is therefore possible they might be dirty when it comes time to put them in your suitcase!

Though the only item that might seem necessary is a bathing suit, do not forget other items you will be needing:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, conditionner, make up remover, moisturizing cream: do not forget ziploc-style bags for everything that could leak!
  • Sunscreen
  • Aloe cream: in case the sunscreen does not work as you would have hoped
  • First aid kit, including some basic drugs and some of your secret miracle remedies. Imagine searching for Orajel in a Manzanillo, Mexico pharmacy. It is quite a bit of jabber when you do not speak perfect Spanish!

As for clothes, do not forget...

  • Confortable and light clothing
  • Nicer clothes: there's always a reason to celebrate
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • The hardest part for all girls: limiting the amount of shoes! A pair of sandals, a pair of sports shoes and a pair of nice should should be plenty!

Finally, it is important to look at the airline you will be taking's particular restrictions in terms of the size and weight of your luggage. If you suitcase is not closing properly, it is no a sign you need a bigger one! After all, you want to get to your destination, no?!

Oh, and don't forget your passport and all the papers that confirm your reservations!

ON SITE

When we travel, it is always important to pay special attention to local cultures. Even if "all inclusive" hotels might seem very americanized, it is important not to forget that many employees are locals.

Often, a simple "gracias" in a country where they speak Spanish will be the first step to making new friends!

Bon voyage!
